Radio Paradise

It astounds me that I have never blogged about my love of Radio Paradise.

You know how much I love music and radio in particular, especially if you read my Desert Island Discs post.

One of my oldest friends introduced me to this internet radio station when K and I were expecting our first child. As each song came on, I was struck by how good it was. Not merely background music, but music that drew me in.

My email archives tell me that I signed up as a member two days before E was born, so our children’s lives have been infused with William Goldsmith’s Main Mix, a rich and eclectic music collection. They know that on a Sunday afternoon, the TV in the living room is reserved for displaying photos while William provides the soundtrack to our weekend.

I don’t interact with the website much, but I have installed the app on pretty much every device I have that plays music. I don’t install apps lightly, but I like to take RP with me wherever I go. As I type this, the Sonos speakers in my office are filling the room with a song I’ve never heard before (Time Flies by Shakey Graves). I like it.

The high-quality, advertisement- and news-free music programming that Radio Paradise broadcasts over the internet remains a thing of wonder even after a decade and a half. I love the eclectic mix of styles. Sometimes they play music that’s in my physical media collection, but more often they don’t, and this is a great source of discovery. Were it not for Radio Paradise, I would probably never have seen amazing artists such as Neko Case and Iron and Wine live because I wouldn’t have known they existed.

Thank you William, and team!
